About Kara |

Kara's interest and fascination with pregnancy, childbirth, and the newborn period blossomed as she studied Psychology as an undergraduate. Child development captured her interest and she directed her passion toward learning more about development during pregnancy and the process of childbirth. While a graduate student at the University of Maine she learned more about infant development and wrote her Master's Thesis about women's childbirth experiences.
Following graduate school Kara worked for a non-profit agency as a home visitor for first-time parents and their babies. Through this universal program she provided support and education to many families during this often challenging period. During this time she also became a Certified Lactation Counselor through The Center for Breastfeeding.
From 2006-2009 Kara lived in San Francisco and gained a wealth of wonderful experience in the Bay Area. She taught Newborn Parenting and Breastfeeding classes at California Pacific Medical Center for three years. She also provided postpartum doula support services to over 30 families before enrolling in the UCSD Lactation Consultant program. She sat for the IBCLC exam in July 2009 after hundreds of hours of studying and clinical time in hospital and outpatient settings. She is proud to be an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant supporting breastfeeding families!
Kara currently works at Maine Medical Center as a per diem Lactation Consultant and facilitates the Breastfeeding Support Group at the MMC campus in Scarborough every Tuesday from 1-3pm.
Throughout her education and varied experiences Kara has come to value the transition into parenthood more than ever. It is her goal as a Lactation Consultant and Postpartum Doula to make this transition as comfortable as possible for new and growing families!
